Almost 88% population of whole of AJK lives in Rural areas, whereas this percentage in the recently earthquake listed areas is not less than 95%. The affected areas (Neelum, Muzaffarahabad, Bagh and Poonch) are almost 95% hilly in topography. The conventional construction of houses is of Random Ruble Stone Masonry walls, with wood-logs and earth soil on roof tops, keeping less or no consideration to seismic forces. However, in Urban Towns or in peripheral areas, RCC and CGI sheet-Proofed house had been constructed, but with little care of seismic efforts. The Cataclysmic earthquake that struck on the 8th of October 2005, resulted in a big devastation never before witnessed in the history of Pakistan. Almost 4,50,000 houses of the above mentioned areas were damaged in full. Due to severe weather conditions in the winter, it is the need of the hour to provide a minimum shelter to the survivors of this catastrophe.
